Boardroom Beauty: Red Lips

Whilst most other catwalks had the preened and polished 'natural' faces of the models floating down stream towards the cameras, others went for more colourful incarnations of beauty. Most of these looks were completely unwearable in day-to-day life (see: Christian Dior) but a few tapped into the mindset of women the world round and figured out just what makes us feel both confident and feminine.

"It needs to look sassy and sexy", said Burberry Prorsum's makeup artist Wendy Rowe to Style.com's Skye Delap as she applied Burberry's Lipstick in Siren to each model's mouth. Normally front-and-center of the aforementioned barefaced aesthetic parade, Burberry Prorsum travelled down a different path this Spring/Summer, opting for a flash of red on the lips accessorised only with glowing skin and tumbling locks.

Of course, we all know this isn't just a modern day look - as Rowe describes, the woman invoked by this particular choice of colour palette "has a definite forties look about her". From mental pictures of Marilyn Monroe through to Jessica Rabbit, the red lip has long been associated with vintage glamour and a distinctly female sex appeal. Nowadays, celebrities run fanfares around such cult products such as MAC's Ruby Woo (a fantastic true red that flatters almost all skin tones) and even have a go at creating their own perfect shade (FYI, Rimmel Kate Lasting Finish Matte Lipstick in 107 is my go-to for a buildable, deep blue-toned red).

That's not to say, however, that this look cannot be worn throughout the day in more mundane settings - such as sat opposit your boss for an appraisal, say, or on an important meeting with clients. The red lip works harder than any makeup look in inspiring a sense of confidence in the wearer. Catch the right tone and it can brighten the complexion, make the eyes sparkle and even appear to whiten teeth. Whether applied like a complex surgical operation involving pencils and brushes or slicked straight on from the bullet, red lipstick is the easiest addition to make to your look if your feel your confidence flagging. Invest a Saturday in finding your own perfect shade and keep the bullet in your bag at all times - you never know when you're going to need your next boost.
